doctor who

This just in from the UK – David Tennant won’t be coming back in 2010 for the next full season of Doctor Who.  I kinda had a feeling this was coming; and while I’m glad there’s 4 more specials coming with him; I will miss his manic peregrinations in the TARDIS.

Gallifreyone News Item

Part the first

What a great few weeks for sci-fi, I guess. Was treated a couple weeks ago to the BBC Children In Need special for Doctor Who, in which current Doctor David Tennant meets his fifth incarnation in the form of Peter Davison. It takes a while for Doc #5 to put it together that he is in fact meeting his future self, and not an obsessed fan who managed to sneak into his TARDIS and redecorate. It was a nice little episode; with some great lines, and in essence, a fan letter from Tennant’s doc to Davison’s.

I am curious, because once again in the show we’re witness to a paradox (Tennant’s doctor knowing how to fix the problem of the two doctors meeting, because Davison’s doctor remembers how it was done); though if he remembered that, why pray tell, didn’t he remember that the Master would be back, hmm? But more to the point, the series seems to be repleat with paradoxes (paradoxii, paradoxen?) in the form of the return of the Master, the creation of the Face of Boe… I know there’s a couple others in there, but I think I’ll need to take a sick day to work out the flow chart. Now with the news of Billie Piper coming back as Rose Tyler, I’m curious what all is going to be afoot in the blue box, with not one, not two, not three, but 4 companions travelling with the Doctor (we’ll see the return of Catherine Tate as Donna Noble, Freema Agyeman as Martha Jones, and John Barrowman as Cap’n Jack). I for one can’t wait.

Part the second

Battlestar Galactica Razor. Have to say, it reignited my interest in the show. I was a little underwhelmed with the last half of the third season with a lot of the human on human violence and melodrama, and the Kara Thrace is she or isn’t she fifty million dollar question. Anywho.. I enjoyed Razor. We got a lot of backstory on a lot of folks; there was a neat bit with old-school vocoded cylons, and we got to hear the “All of this has happened before, and it will all happen again.” again.

I remember hearing the phrase at some point in season 3, and thinking it sounded familiar, and then during Razor, it started bugging me. The phrase was a sample in a song. Ministry? No. My Life with the Thrill Kill Kult? No. What? ahh… of course. Information Society’s Seek 200. I’m not sure where the sample came from; though I’ve seen the quote attributed to Peter Pan. So who knows. Maybe they find Earth, but it doesn’t really matter beacause Tinkerbell died, because the applause wasn’t loud enough. I dunno; just a thought. But my brain is fried these days.

Pure gold. Jon Pertwee, aka the 3rd Doctor from Doctor Who, stops by Son of Svengoolie circa 1984 to promote the Doctor Who convention at the O’Hare Hyatt. I’m not entirely sure if the set falling apart around them is an homage, or just low budget.
