As a kid I absolutely loved loved loved Tom & Jerry. I loved the early Hanna Barbera and Chuck Jones vintages the most. The arms race that takes place in Guided Mouse-ille is classic T&J, and oddly pre-disposed me to understand learning about history in the 50s and 60s with the real-world counterparts of the nuclear arms race. So, yeah cartoons can be educational! As a kid, though, I could not for the life of me understand the ending. I’m sad to say, it makes all too much sense to me now.

I think I want to start keeping track of entertaining cartoons and movie clips; and this is as good of a place as any. Watched this this morning and it’s a doozie. A Cher music video in cartoon form; I’m guessing from the Sonny & Cher variety show. It actually seems a little dark for a family variety hour, but hey, a kid’s gotta learn about crimes of the heart from somewhere. Why not Cher?

Saw this in this week’s New City; have to think this is how my brain works, when it works:

“I studied with Ed Paschke,” she says, “and at one point he took us over to his studio and he had about six paintings up on the easels and was working on all of them at once. And he said, ‘Well I could do one painting in a week, or I could do six paintings in six weeks.’ His idea was that by having all the paintings take longer and come up together, he would have more ideas about them as he was doing them. This is really true. One of the reasons why I like to spend years and years on things is that you have a chance to put more layers into it, make the connections more interesting, make the whole thing much richer than you could if you knew immediately what you were going to do and just pounded it out.”

Afternoons with the girlfriends

Radio just seems to keep getting duller and duller. Kathy and Judy have left WGN. I have to admit the guilty pleasure of listening to Judy & Kathy on WGN since I was a snot-nosed kid in High School. It started by osmosis, my dad listened to them in the car a lot, and in the office at good ole JAK Industrial when I would spend summers stocking shelves, running deliveries, or fighting with my sister over what was playing on the radio.

They had such a disarming quality. Asking seemingly inane questions, yet soliciting the most ardent responses to them, from listeners and guests. The most obvious that comes to my mind, is the “Do you need to wear underwear with pantyhose?” question. I remember it being very polarizing stuff. I never understood all the fervor, until I remember calling in to prod them to ask it when they had RuPaul as a guest. Her response? Do what feels right to you.

Truth to tell, I haven’t listened to a whole lot of the show lately; I haven’t listened to a whole lot of radio lately. I think with all the ads, and the overall homogenization of the medium, I usually just bypass it when I have an iPod with me. So, I am sad that with Kathy & Judy’s departure, the airwaves just got a little blander. Kathy & Judy, I salute you!

P.S. To this day, I still get their themesong stuck in my head. Set to the music of the Patty Duke show the line that always gets stuck is this:
