Apparently he wasn’t a total douche bag rail baron; he also gave a chunk of money to the University of Chicago to build an observatory in his name. More after the jump… Yerkes Observatory in Williams Bay on Lake Geneva, WI is home to the world’s largest refractory telescope. Of note, I visited this fantastic ediface back in 1985 for my grade school’s “Outdoor Education” field trip. Good stuff.
